Curtains Measuring Guide
Measuring for curtains can sometimes be a daunting task; you want to make sure that you get your dimensions exactly right, so here is some guidance to help you on your way. Alternative we can provide this service for you, please Contact Us
Width
Step 1: Measure the pole or the track fitted above the window in cms. It is this pole or track length that we need for the width measurement
Drop
Step 2: Decide where you wish the curtains to drop bearing in mind the following:
- Sill-length curtains should finish 1.25cm above the sill.
- Below-the-sill curtains should drop 15cm below the sill.
- Floor-length curtains should finish approximately 1.5cm from the floor (unless you prefer them trailing for a more boho, romantic look).
Step 3: If you're using a curtain track, measure from the top of the track.
• For eyelet and tab top curtains hanging from a curtain pole, measure from the top of the pole to where the curtain bottom should finish, making sure to add 4cm for eyelet curtains.
• For pencil pleat curtains hanging from a curtain pole, measure the drop from the bottom of a curtain ring.
Aqua by Design ensure there is enough fabric to gather and pleat by adding the following fullness
If you have choose Pencil Pleat curtains, x 2 fullness.
If you have Eyelet or Tab Top curtains, x 1.5 – 2 fullness.
Curtain Headings Guide
Pencil Pleat
• Pencil pleat consist of closely-gathered folds that resemble a row of pencils and are the most common and traditional type of curtain headings.
• Attached to the folds is a wide strip of tape, which runs across the top and attaches to curtain hooks, which then attach to your window pole or track.
• Pencil pleats are a great option if you ever need to adjust the height of your curtains as the level of tape can be adjusted to suit your preference. Be aware, this would require unpicking and re-sewing the thread.
• The look of the top bunching can also be customized depending on the quantity of hooks used (use more hooks for a tighter look and less to create shallow folds).
Eyelet
• Aqua by Design offer 40mm eyelet rings, which are simple rings, actually within the curtain heading, that thread through the curtain pole.
• Easy to install and achieving a clean and minimal look, eyelets are suitable for all curtain fabrics, but can only be used with a curtain pole, therefore not compatible with curtain tracks, valances or bay windows.
Tab Top
• Tab tops are when loops of fabric are stitched to the top of the curtain to create a clean, casual and contemporary look.
• Easy to hang, the curtain pole simply slides through the fabric loops in a similar fashion to eyelets, so again can only be used with a curtain pole.

Roman Blind Measuring Guide
Aqua by Design can make Roman Blinds in any of our designs or your designed fabric.
What is a Roman Blind?
A roman blind is composed of a single rectangular piece of flat fabric, which will form a series of horizontal folds when drawn up.
This classic blind style is suited to both traditional and contemporary tastes and suits a wide range of fabric styles. Roman blinds are a great choice when you are looking to save space whilst remaining stylish.
Aqua by Design top tips- Before you start to measure for your Roman Blinds
We recommend a window recess overlap of at least 6cm / 2.5″ all round ie top, bottom and sides. This ensures that the window does not show on either side or obscure part of the window when fully raised. Step by step measuring guide for outside recess:
1. Measure the width of your window and any overlap you require. We advise an overlap of at least 6cm on the window recess ie add 6cm each side.
2. Measure the drop (height) of your window and any overlap you require. Once again we advise an overlap of at least 6cm on the window recess, ie add at least 6cm both to the top and bottom of your actual window frame ( you can add more).
3. Use these exact measurements throughout our website when giving your ‘Actual’ measurements.
4. You can now enter your actual blind measurements and select the size that your measurements fall within ie xsmall, small, medium or large. You will see the cost at the end of your options based on the size of your blind and any additional extras chosen.
Please Note: we do not make any deductions to the measurements given when using the actual blind size option.
Measuring for Roman Blinds - Inside Recess (if you would the blind inside your window frame)
We recommend measuring the exact frame size inside your window to ensure your blind fits within the window.
Step by step measuring guide for inside recess:

Cable Options You may choose between brass or chrome, and you may choose if you want this on the right hand side or left hand side.
Design – Fabric / Alignment
Fabric blinds are always cut on the same design at the top; if you order multiple blinds of equal size in the same fabric the position of the design will be the same throughout. If you order blinds of different sizes the design will differ at the bottom but will match at the top.
However, we cannot match the design of the fabric on the edges of adjacent blinds. This is due to part of the design being lost in the blind facings, and as the blinds are made with the centre of the fabric design in the middle of the blind, blinds with different widths will have different parts of the design at the edges.
If you would like several blinds it is best to place the order for all blinds at the same time as the fabric used will be from the same batch. There is a slight variation in batches and ordering at different times could mean that a different batch of fabric is used and a slight variation may occur.
Movement
Fabric may shrink or relax due to variations in atmospheric conditions such as humidity and temperature over time. It is important to control the environment surrounding the blinds to prevent movement. We recommend your blinds do not hang too close to radiators or areas of excessive moisture from condensation or excessive heat and dryness. Condensation can also result in the blind discolouring and eventually the fabric deteriorating because of this.
Hanging
Full instructions on how to hang your boat blinds will be included with your delivery or you can download instructions from our website (see Fitting Instructions above).
Care
Please take great care with your roman blinds. All our roman blinds are dry clean only. Please ensure you keep your blinds safe by using the P clip provided so the cable is tied back and out of harms way. Please take care of the blind around the press stud area to gently secure in place and gently pop out for winding up. Whilst our fabric collection has been chosen for it’s durability, it will still be subject to wear, tear and damage if tugged and pulled too harshly.

Aqua by Design top tips- Before you start to measure for your Roman Blinds
- Roman blinds will be made to fit outside a window recess
- Always use a metal tape measure as cloth or plastic may stretch
- Double check all measurements
- Measurements must be in centimetres
- Ensure there are no obstructions around your window.
We recommend a window recess overlap of at least 6cm / 2.5″ all round ie top, bottom and sides. This ensures that the window does not show on either side or obscure part of the window when fully raised. Step by step measuring guide for outside recess:

Measuring for Roman Blinds - Inside Recess (if you would the blind inside your window frame)
We recommend measuring the exact frame size inside your window to ensure your blind fits within the window.
Step by step measuring guide for inside recess:
- Measure the width within your window frame in 3 places. Use the shortest width to give your Actual Width Measurement. Then deduct 1cm off the width so your blind fits snuggly inside your window
- Measure the drop within your window frame in 3 places. Use the shortest drop measurement, this is your Actual Drop Measurement, DO NOT deduct anything from this measurement so the blind will just sit on the windowsill
- Use these exact measurements throughout our website when giving your ‘Actual’ measurements.

Box Cushion Seating Measuring Guide
Measuring for square or rectangular cushions if you have existing cushions already:
Using a standard steel retractable tape measure (rather than a fabric tape measure), keep the foam in the seating cushion and measure the length of the cushion in cms ie the longest side of the cushion. Then measure the width of the cushion ie the shortest side of the cushion. Double check your measurements, and ensure you are measuring in cms, then add these measurements to your order:
If you are starting from scratch ie you don’t have seating already, then using a standard steel retractable tape measure (rather than a fabric tape measure), measure the length of the seating area, from edge to edge in cms, and the width of the seating area edge to edge in cms. Double check your measurements, and ensure you are measuring in cms, then add these measurements to your order.
Box Cushion Actual Width (cm) - shortest side
Box Cushion Actual Length (cm) - longest side
Measuring for irregular cushions if you have existing cushions already:
Please take a photo of the cushion you want replacing labelling sides A, B, C and D, in addition draw the shape of your cushion labelling the sides A,B,C and D. Measure each of the sides using a standard steel retractable tape measure (rather than a fabric tape measure), and mark the measurements in cms on your drawing beside A, B, C and D. We would prefer the drawing to be drawn with typed measurments so it is very clear. We will accept hand drawing with measurements (send via a photo) but please ensure the numbers are clear and double checked. Email both the photo and your drawing (all labelled with measurements) to us at [email protected] . Your price will be based on the max width and max length. Double check all your measurements and ensure you are measuring in cms.

Choosing a depth or thickness
The standard seating is 10cm depth for comfort or if you would like to use as an occasional bed. 5cm is often used for benches or outdoor seating. 15cm is very thick and an option if you want your seating extra chunky.
Optional Extras
You can add optional extras such as piping and buttons which adds detailing to your box cushions and helps to create a lovely tight fit around all the seams. If piping is chosen we usually pipe both top and bottom seams, please let us know if you would only prefer one seam to be piped.
